Location
Home to the 5,000 citizens of Erlenbach, this village lies along the Gold Coast in a sunny location on the right banks of Lake Zurich, between Küsnacht and Herrliberg in the Meilen District. Whereas the development of the town over the past several years had been dominated by a – relatively speaking – “massive” population influx and extensive building activity, efforts today are instead geared toward safeguarding Erlenbach’s distinctive village charm by pursuing a concertedly “mild” rate of growth, and targeted measures to preserve the balance between commerce and village life.
Shopping
In the attractively arranged town center, you can find the Migros fresh grocer, bakeries, butchers, post office, bank, dry cleaners, apothecaries, a household goods store, various boutiques and much, much more (and ample parking spaces!).
Public transportation
The town of Erlenbach offers a dense network of public transportation services, including local busses, S-Bahn service, and shipping transportation. A mere ten minutes on the S-Bahn will whisk you from the Erlenbach and Winkel S-Bahn stations into downtown Zurich. You only need five minutes by car to reach Meilen, where you can pick up the Lake Zurich ferry to Horgen, on the opposite shores of the lake.
Schools
Erlenbach has three kindergartens and all levels of primary and secondary schooling; the public Gymnasium (college preparatory school) is located in neighboring Küsnacht. Nurseries, after-school lunch programs and day-nurseries tend to the children when the schools have closed their doors for the day.
Recreation
Erlenbach has a terrific assortment of recreational options, thanks to its hiking and lakeside trails, the tennis and rowing club, athletic courts and two public beaches for bathing. Several associations, adult education, the families club, the Erlibacher Volksbühne theater and the Erlebach Kulturtreff add to the range of entertainment and recreational options.
Restaurants
An exciting selection of restaurants featuring culinary concepts of every conceivable type is available for those with a penchant for dining out: The popular Hotel Erlibacherhof; the outstanding Italian restaurant Sinfonia right next to the Erlenbach train station; the exclusive Pflugstein, a temple for gourmands, on the Erlenbach hillside, with fantastic view across Lake Zurich; the Thai restaurant “Taipan”. These are but a few of the many restaurants for those gourmet palates willing to go the extra mile in search of culinary ecstasy.
