Situated in Chur’s Rhine valley, this charming, historic market town has around 3,000 inhabitants and constitutes the capital of the region, famed for its vineyards on the south-facing slopes along the Rhine. Apart from its Blauburgunder Beerliwein, a local Pinot Noir variety, Maienfeld itself is well known for its international horse races in October – not to mention Heidi, the world-famous children’s story by Johanna Spyri. In addition to its rural attractions, the idyllic village also benefits from a high quality of life as well as good transport connections to Chur, Vaduz, St. Gallen and Zurich.
The locality’s cultural scene is actively furthered by its 50 or so clubs and associations. Maienfeld’s defining emblems include the Brandis and Salenegg castles, the Heididorf – a village with the original Heidi house and Heidi path - the Heidi fountain, the Heidiland motorway service station on the A13, the municipal library, the Amandus church, the Steig chapel on the St. Luzisteig, a popular climb, plus numerous other places of interests as well as good restaurants offering a variety of gastronomic options. Maienfeld’s pastures border Liechtenstein and Austria and are home to around 200 cows; milk is made to butter and cheese locally on the Stürfis alp.
